Linford Christie says too much expected of Craig Pickering
Former Olympic champion athlete Linford Christie thinks the media and the sporting world are expecting too much of Craig Pickering and that he is under too much pressure to become the first white sprinter to break the 10-second barrier for the 100m.
Craig Pickering, 20, is currently Britain's number one sprinter.
Linford Christie, 47, said: "I don't think they realise how much pressure they are putting the poor guy under,
"It doesn't matter whether you are black or white. It's not about colour, it's about talent."
Craig Pickering has been performing very well so far this season, and has clocked a personal best time of 10.16secs, although this is a way from Linford Christie's British record of 9.87secs.
Linford Christie also cautioned about calling Craig Pickering the 'Great White Hope', and he pointed out: "It causes a lot of problems with the other black athletes on the team."
