Katharine Merry comments on Christine Ohuruogu's case
Olympic medal-winner Katharine Merry has said that Christine Ohuruogu's battle to overturn her Olympic ban has boosted the anti-doping campaign's strength, not weakened it.
Katharine Merry is reported to have said: "It's driven home the responsibility athletes have. This is their career."
Christine Ohuruogu, 23, who won 400m gold at this year's World Championships, was banned from the Olympic Games after she received a one-year suspension for missing three drugs tests.
However, Christine Ohuruogu successfully appealed against this claiming there were mitigating circumstances for her actions, and the British Olympic Association (BOA) agreed with her and decided to clear her for future events.
Christine Ohuruogu will be able to take part in Beijing, but there is likely to be a backlash from some people, who feel the BOA's decision to clear her name has set a dangerous precedent and weakened the anti-drugs in sport campaign's position.
