Kara Goucher beats British athlete Paula Radcliffe
British athlete Paula Radcliffe came second in the Great North Run when American Kara Goucher beat her.
Paula Radcliffe, 33, who was taking part in her first race for 21 months, started well and kept pace with Kara Goucher for the first six miles but then the latter runner went easily into the lead and held it to the finish.
Kara Goucher finished the race 56 seconds clear in one hour, six minutes and 57 seconds, and in so doing set a new record for the year's fastest half-marathon and the eighth fastest ever.
It was Paula Radcliffe's comeback to sport after giving birth to daughter Isla in January and after a back injury, and although she started well enough she just couldn't match Kara Goucher, who gave an incredible performance.
Kara Goucher said: "It was pretty funny, people thought I was Paula the whole way. I felt so bad that I was crushing everybody!"
