Justin Gatlin's coach Trevor Graham to plead not guilty
Justin Gatlin's coach Trevor Graham is ready to plead not guilty to charges relating to the Balco scandal of lying to federal agents, when he goes to court in San Francisco on Thursday, and if found guilty, he faces five years in jail and a £132,000 fine.
The Balco case saw many athletes banned for using the illegal steroid THG.
Trevor Graham tipped off authorities about Balco, leading to suspensions for Tim Montgomery, who he used to coach, and British athlete Dwain Chambers.
The prosecution will allege Graham has been providing his athletes, which have included former Olympic champions Gatlin and Marion Jones as well as Tim Montgomery, with performance-enhancing drugs for as long as almost 10 years.
The government indictment is alleging that Trevor Graham lied when interviewed by federal agents during their investigations in June 2004, however, his lawyer Joseph Zeszotarski said: "As Trevor has said all along, he has not been involved in any way in the distribution of illicit substances."
