Jo Pavey comes third in Great North Run
The UK sprinter Jo Pavey came third in the Great North Run half-marathon after Ethiopia's Gete Wami won the race.
Pavey, who is aiming to qualify for the London marathon in 2012, battled hard in the closing stretch with Wami and the Kenyan runner Magdelane Mukunzi, who had held the lead.
Wami, however, was the one who finally won after gaining the leading position with just 30 metres to go.
The weather conditions were good and Jo Pavey used this to her advantage when she broke her personal half-marathon best time by nearly two minutes.
Pavey, who came in 12th place in the 10,000m final at the recent Olympic Games in Beijing, finished in one hour 08 minutes and 53 seconds, with Wami beating her by a second.
Pavey says she is going to use her result in this race to decide whether to compete in the marathon at next summer's World Athletics Championships or not.
