Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell runs second fastest 100m
Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell ran the second fastest 100m ever recorded in his performance at the Athletissima Grand Prix on Tuesday.
25-year-old Powell clocked 9.72 seconds and equalled the world record Usain Bolt had set in New York in May of last year.
21-year-old Bolt, who had been the winner of the 200m in Lausanne in a time of 19.63, set the 100m world record of 9.69 at the Beijing Olympic Games last month.
Powell, who was holder of the world record between June 2005 and May 2008 with times of 9.77 and 9.74 seconds, only came fifth at the Olympics.
On Monday, Powell said Bolt's incredible performance in Beijing had inspired him to try for a time of 9.59.
Bolt had amazed spectators two weeks back when he beat Powell's record by 0.05 seconds.
But Asafa Powell, who also came fifth at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, has not given up on claiming an individual gold in future.
