Irish runner Cathal Lombard retires
Irish runner Cathal Lombard, who in the past had confessed to doping, has now announced his retirement from sport.
Cathal Lombard, 32, and from Cork, is reported to have confirmed his "retirement from competitive athletics" and to have thanked those people who had supported him.
Cathal Lombard made his decision to retire just a fortnight after he made a surprising win at the Irish Cross Country Championships in Belfast.
Cathal Lombard had been disgraced when he was given a two-year ban on the eve of the 2004 Athens Olympics because he had admitted to having used the banned blood booster EPO.
Nothing much had been heard about Cathal Lombard until his recent Belfast win, which had earned him an offer from Athletics Ireland to take part in this month's World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh. Cathal Lombard hadn't accepted it however.
But Cathal Lombard had claimed he wanted to achieve the qualifying time for the Olympic Games and the Olympic Council of Ireland were seeking legal advice on its options over him taking part at Beijing. Now that Cathal Lombard has retired the matter becomes redundant.
