Ethiopian runner Kenenisa Bekele goes for world record
Ethiopian distance runner Kenenisa Bekele has set his goal on beating the world indoor two-mile record at the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham on 16 February.
Kenenisa Bekele, 25, will be doing his best to surpass the record set by compatriot Haile Gebrselassie who holds the current one of eight minutes 4.69 seconds and which he recorded in the midlands five years ago.
Kenenisa Bekele, who is the Olympic and world 10,000m champion, had himself set a world 5,000m indoor record in Birmingham back in 2004 and he claimed a 2,000m world best at the event in 2007.
Kenenisa Bekele, who won a third successive Great Edinburgh Cross Country title just last Saturday, is reported to have said: "Obviously I would like to break the world record, but this is a tough one. Let's hope there is lots of early pace which would help me in making it."
