English sprinter Dwain Chambers gets the go ahead for Sheffield
English sprinter Dwain Chambers has been given the go ahead to take part at the world indoor trials and national championships in Sheffield this weekend, UK Athletics (UKA) have revealed.
UKA bosses have reluctantly agreed to allow Dwain Chambers, 29, to participate after they had to admit they didn't have "sufficiently strong legal grounds" to prevent him doing so.
Dwain Chambers' legal representatives had threatened to take action if he was not allowed to compete at the event.
The UKA wanted to stop him taking part because Dwain Chambers has not been given a drugs test since November 2006.
And UKA chief executive Niels de Vos explained: "To maintain the public's full confidence in our athletes and in the sport in general we want to ensure beyond all doubt that all athletes wishing to compete under the Union flag are drug-free."
But Niels de Vos added: "However, we recognise that we do not have sufficiently strong legal grounds to refuse him an invitation given our published invitation policy. Reluctantly therefore, Dwain Chambers has been informed he is permitted to participate."
