David Moorcroft resigns from being UK Athletics chief
David Moorcroft has announced his resignation from being chief executive of UK Athletics.
David Moorcroft, 53, in charge of British athletics since 1997, has been increasingly criticised following a string of poor international results.
"I am convinced I am taking the right decision - it is time to let someone new take the helm and lead the sport to London 2012," said David Moorcroft.
Lord Sebastian Coe, Steve Cram and Daley Thompson have been tipped as candidates to replace David Moorcroft and the pressure on Moorcroft's successor will be very great ahead of the 2012 Olympics, to be hosted by London.
However, David Moorcroft will be staying on for a time to make sure of a clean transition to whoever takes over.
Minister for sport, Richard Caborn, praised David Moorcroft as a "man of integrity".
"Moorcroft has made a first-class contribution to athletics in this country, both as a world record-breaking competitor and as an administrator," said Richard Caborn in a statement.
