Cyclist Nicole Cooke's rival Marta Bastianelli fails drugs test
British cyclist Nicole Cooke's proposed rival in the Beijing Olympics, Marta Bastianelli, who is the women's cycling world road race champion, has failed a doping test when she tested positive for a banned stimulant drug.
21-year-old Bastianelli failed the test whilst taking part in the Under-23 World Championships earlier this month.
A spokesman for the Italian Olympic Committee (Coni) now said that because of this news it was unlikely she will be taking part in the Olympics.
But Italian Cycling Federation president Renato Di Rocco explained that they would put in a request for Bastianelli's B sample to be analysed.
Marta Bastianelli, who is said to be obsessed with dieting, tested positive for the slimming aid fenfluramine. However, Bastianelli maintains that she is innocent and has blamed her local chemist.
But Coni president Gianni Petrucci said that if Bastianelli's B sample proves positive that the committee he represents will not be able to make any exceptions for her.
