British athletics chiefs take terrorism threats in Kenya seriously
UK Athletics performance director Dave Collins and British athletics chiefs say they are paying heed very seriously to warnings of terrorist attacks on the World Cross Country Championships in Kenya.
A statement went out on Tuesday from the American embassy in Mombasa warning of a possible terrorist threat at the event and Dave Collins said: "You ignore information such as this at your peril."
American citizens in Kenya have been urged to be vigilant, and to keep in mind that nine years ago there were attacks on the US embassy there and in Tanzania in which 250 people died.
However, the IAAF's Nick Davies said: "We have received an assurance from the Kenyan government that a specific security plan involving all branches of the country's military and police forces is already in place."
The World Cross Country Championships event is going ahead despite the potential threat and Ethiopian officials have said that five-times double champion Kenenisa Bekele will now take part.
"Fellow athletes told me to compete in Mombasa - and fans asked me to reconsider my decision," Kenenisa Bekele is reported to have said.
