Australian runner Benita Johnson wins Great Edinburgh Run
Australian distance runner Benita Johnson made an impressive win at the Bupa Great Edinburgh Run when she defeated Kenya's Rose Cheruiyot by 13 seconds.
Johnson ran the complete course of 10 kilometres in 32min 20sec, and Aniko Kalovics of Hungary came in third place.
Benita Johnson had missed four months training during the winter because of an injured knee so it was particularly impressive in view of this. She waited until the halfway point before she really gave it her best on a steep hill, and by doing so she got well clear of former Amsterdam marathon winner Cheruiyot.
After the race Johnson said happily: "After my injury, I'm so happy to win here. I put in a lot of hard work before Edinburgh and, over what was a hard course. I'm delighted to see the benefits of that. "
And she added: "This is a great win for me and, after being out injured for so long when I got very frustrated, this tells me I now have a strong base to build upon towards the Olympics."
