Athletics coach Dave Arnold dies and Kelly Holmes pays tribute
Dave Arnold the Kent athletics coach who played a massive part in Dame Kelly Holmes' Olympic success story has died at the age of 72 from cancer at Hospice in the Weald, in Pembury.
Dave Arnold took on double gold medallist Kelly Holmes when she was 12 years old.
Kelly Holmes won gold in the 800m and 1500m at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
"Dave was a huge part in my career, an amazing guy, full of energy, always meticulous in his planning. It is a real loss," said Dame Kelly Holmes.
"Dave was the person that gave me that extra courage to really go for the 800m and 1500m.
"I'd been training in Cyprus prior to Athens and I would always message him to say what I had done in training and was it any good, because I knew he would give me an objective and very honest answer.
"He was always really excited by what I was giving him. Even during the Olympic games after each round, I would say 'did you see it, what did you think and what should I do?'" Kelly Holmes added.
