Athlete Marion Jones pleads guilty to lying about steroids
American track and field athlete Marion Jones has pleaded guilty to having lied about her use of banned steroids but Balco founder Victor Conte says she shouldn't lose the medals she won at the Sydney Olympics.
Marion Jones, 31, has pleaded guilty to lying to investigators and also said she will be retiring from athletics. Marion Jones was in tears as she made her announcement outside court on Saturday.
Marion Jones faces a six-month prison sentence and could lose the five medals - three of them gold - she won at the 2000 Olympic Games.
Victor Conte served four months in prison for distributing the drugs and his company is accused of developing the steroid THG, which Marion Jones admitted using.
Marion Jones had repeatedly denied using the steroids, but Victor Conte said he knew from personal experience that she had used them.
Victor Conte lost a defamation lawsuit and settled out of court with Marion Jones after claiming she used the drugs in 2006.
