American sprinter Tyson Gay wins 100m despite windy weather
American sprinter Tyson Gay ran the fastest 100m in the world this year, clocking 9.84 seconds at the US Championships, and in spite of very windy weather conditions at the time.
Tyson Gay, 24, won the race by 0.23secs, the highest record at the championships since 1975.
Tyson Gay said: "I was really hoping to get the world record, but the wind conditions weren't too friendly."
University student Trindon Holliday took second place behind Tyson Gay in Indianapolis, coming home in 10.07secs and Walter Dix was in third position with 10.09secs.
"That was basically my PR (personal record) so I know I am ready to run faster," explained Tyson Gay, who has run times of 9.76 and 9.79secs this year in windy weather.
Compatriot sprinter and former world record-holder Maurice Greene, who ran 9.82secs at the 2001 World Championships, is the only runner who has run faster into a headwind than Tyson Gay.
