American sprinter Marion Jones gets six months jail
American disgraced sprinter Marion Jones has been given six months in jail for having lied about her steroid use and involvement in a drugs fraud case.
Marion Jones, 31, had pleaded guilty to the charges last October but was sentenced on Friday.
Marion Jones had appealed to US District Judge Kenneth Karas to be "as merciful as a human being can be," however, the judge nevertheless imposed the maximum sentence under her plea deal.
Passing sentence the judge said: "Nobody is above the legal obligation to tell the truth. I recognise this is not a happy day for you or for your family."
After it was all over, Marion Jones is reported to have said: "I respect the judge's order, and I truly hope that people will learn from my mistakes."
Marion Jones sentence also includes two years' probation and supervised release, in which time she will have to perform 800 hours of community service.
Marion Jones has been ordered to surrender on March 11 to start her sentence.
