Many firsts for Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton, who was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire in the UK, is a Formula One racing driver with a very impressive career so far and the holder of many records.
Lewis Hamilton started his interest in racing cars at an early age when he was initially racing karts at the age of eight. Then a couple of years later, and aged only ten, he approached McLaren team owner Ron Dennis at an awards ceremony and said to him that one day in the future he would drive for McLaren.
Lewis Hamilton knew where he was going and what he wanted, and just four years later, he was signed to the McLaren driver development support programme.
Lewis Hamilton became European karting champion in 2000 with maximum points and he then successfully changed over to racing cars the following year.
Lewis Hamilton won titles in British Formula Renault, European Formula Three and GP2 and he was chosen as a Formula One driver for McLaren in 2007. In his debut season in the top international single seater category Lewis Hamilton became the first rookie driver to lead the world championship. Lewis Hamilton finished on the podium in his first nine races and won three times two-thirds of the way through the season.
Lewis Hamilton holds the following records in Formula One racing driving: the record for the most consecutive podiums from debut race: 9 (previous record was 2), the most consecutive podiums for a British driver: 9 (tied with Jim Clark), the youngest driver to lead the World Championship, and the first driver to achieve consecutive wins from pole position in a debut season.
Lewis Hamilton is also the first black driver to take part in Formula One and the first black driver to win a major race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in any motor racing discipline.
Lewis Hamilton has signed a multi-million pound contract with HarperCollins publishers for his autobiography.
