Sheffield Steelers appoint David Matsos as ice hockey coach
Sheffield Steelers have appointed former Cardiff Devils assistant David Matsos as their new ice hockey coach after Dave Whistle suddenly left, which came as a shock to the team, David Matsos will take over as coach straight away.
Dave Whistle led the club to the Elite League play-off final last season but he has now chosen to stay in Canada after taking on a new coaching job offer.
"It was a great disappointment that we learned so late of Dave's decision," said general manager Mike O'Connor.
"We had absolute trust and belief in him and his ability to recruit a team the people of Sheffield could be proud of, that's why Dave was under contract for the next two years.
"When Dave advised me that he had a job offer in Canada it came completely out of the blue.
"We were all so very disappointed especially bearing in mind the lateness of his decision, however we couldn't stand in his way and wish him well in his new position."
Sheffield Steelers reacted quickly to Dave Whistle leaving them by appointing David Matsos as their new coach.
