Rick DiPietro agrees 15-year deal with NHL's New York Islanders
Goalie Rick DiPietro has confirmed a landmark 15-year deal with the NHL's New York Islanders and worth $4.5m per season, it is the second-longest in American history of the sport.
The only longer contract was the 25-year deal for $25m that Magic Johnson signed with the Los Angeles Lakers back in 1981.
Rick DiPietro, who will be 25 in a week's time, was the top pick in the NHL's 2000 draft and he stopped 90% of the shots he faced in 63 games last season.
"In all of our discussions with Rick, he made it clear that he wanted to be an Islander for the rest of his career," said Islanders general manager and former goalie Garth Snow.
Rick DiPietro said: "I'm extremely appreciative of the commitment (Islanders owner) Charles Wang and Garth have made to me.
"I won't let them, my coaches, my teammates or the fans down."
Rick DiPietro still had two seasons left to run before he was a free agent and this could have netted him more money but not such a long-term commitment as what he now has.
