Pittsburgh NHL player Evgeni Malkin becomes a first
Pittsburgh rookie Evgeni Malkin has just made his mark by becoming the first NHL player in 89 years to score in his first six games.
Evgeni Malkin, 20, and from Russian, discovered the net in the first period and hit an overtime winner as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-3.
Evgeni Malkin's first-period strike matched the long-standing record held by Joe Malone, Newsy Lalonde and Cy Denneny, who had accomplished the feat in their first six games of the 1917-18 season, the NHL's first.
Evgeni Malkin missed the first four games of the regular season after his shoulder was injured in a pre-season game but he is now living up to the publicity over his controversial arrival in America this summer when he walked out on Russian team Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
And yet another Pittsburgh rookie, Jordan Staal, 18, added his fifth goal of the season for the Penguins, who are off to an impressive beginning.
