NHL superstar Mario Lemieux suffers heart problem
NHL star Mario Lemieux has undergone observation in hospital after he
was found to have an irregular heartbeat and the 40-year-old Pittsburgh
Penguins owner-player, a 10-time NHL All-Star, has had numerous medical
problems during a long and illustrious career.
A bout of Hodgkin's disease in 1993 was partly responsible for the Canadian sitting out the entire 1994-95 season.
Mario Lemieux, whose NHL career began in 1984, has also been out of action for long periods with back and hip problems.
Mario Lemieux missed more than half of the Penguins' 1990-91 Stanley
Cup championship season with severe lower back pain and after retiring
for three-and-a half years, he returned in December 2000, but missed
large portions of the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons with hip injuries.
Mario Lemieux had seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points in 25 games
this season, and recently had a four-game streak without a point that
was the longest of his career.
The Penguins are currently bottom of the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division with a 7-14 record.
