Detroit Red Wings ice hockey captain Steve Yzerman to retire Detroit Red Wings ice hockey captain Steve Yzerman has announced he will be retiring after an illustrious 22-year NHL career.
Drafted in 1983, Steve Yzerman has been with the Red Wings ever since, leading them to three Stanley Cup victories and aiding Canada win Olympic gold in 2002.
"I've had a wonderful career and I will really miss it," a tearful Steve Yzerman told a press conference in Michigan.
Steve Yzerman is the longest-serving captain in NHL history at 19 seasons and he retires as the league's sixth leading all-time scorer.
10-time NHL All-Star Steve Yzerman scored 1,755 points, including 692 goals.
Steve Yzerman was named in the NHL's All-Rookie Team in 1984 and won the Lester B Pearson Award honouring the league's outstanding player in 1989 and as well as all this he took the Conn Smythe Trophy as the play-offs MVP in 1998.
