Irish woman hockey player Jill Orbinson retires
Irish field hockey player Jill Orbinson has announced that she has decided to retire from international hockey.
Jill Orbinson, who made her first appearance for her country in 1998 and went on to gain 139 caps, decided to retire from international hockey before the build up towards the Olympic Qualifying Tournament next April gets started. Jill Orbinson said: "I have been thinking about giving up since the Europeans. Now is the right time for me."
Jill Orbinson also added: "I would have liked to have had a bit longer to work with our coach Gene Muller, his coaching has been exciting and I will miss both the girls and all the management."
Jill Orbinson had played on behalf of Ireland in the 2002 World Cup in Australia, the World Cup qualifiers in Rome in 2006 as well as in this year's European Championships, which were held in Manchester.
Jill Orbinson is reported to have given thanks to all the people and organisations who had supported her and she said: "I would like to thank the IHA, ESB, Sports Council NI, Sports Institute of Northern Ireland and The Irish Sports Council for their continued support particularly in the last couple of years, which has been invaluable and enabled me to take time out of work to commit to training."
