Washington Wizards player Gilbert Arenas out of World Basketball Championship
Washington Wizards player Gilbert Arenas has been ruled out of the World Basketball Championship because of a strained groin.
Gilbert Arenas had been in contention to make the final squad of 12 alongside fellow NBA stars LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwayne Wade, however, he suffered the injury during a team practice session in South Korea.
"It's an unfortunate situation but he is not going to be able to continue on. We know Gilbert is disappointed," USA basketball boss Jerry Colangelo commented.
"We're concerned because he has had a history regarding groin pulls. This is a precautionary move but it is important that he return home and get treatment," Jerry Colangelo added.
USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski now has to cut only one player from the 13 remaining to complete his list for the forthcoming tournament, which begins in Japan on Saturday.
