United States beat Australia to reach quarter-finals of World Basketball Championship

carmelo The United States gave a very impressive performance and beat Australia 113-73, which means they now qualify for the quarter-finals of the World Basketball Championship in Japan.

Players Carmelo Anthony scored 20 points, Joe Johnson 18 and Dwyane Wade 15 as the American team set up a battle with Germany.

Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks scored 23 points as Germany held off a late Nigerian surge to claim a victorious 78-77.

All 12 American basketball players scored in their triumphant win while the defence allowed Australia just two baskets and six points in the second period.

The United States, leading by 27-23 after the first quarter, beat Australia's score 18-1 and gained a 45-24 lead.

"That goes to show that when we really get focused and play defence, we can do some damage," said Carmelo Anthony.
