NBA to replace leather basketballs with synthetic after PETA campaign The National Basketball Association (NBA) has chosen to replace leather basketballs with cruelty-free synthetic ones following the example set by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Women's National Basketball Association.
On January 9, 2006, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sent the NCAA information about the leather industry, including the fact that it takes the skin of a whole cow to make just four basketballs.
The changeover to synthetic balls was announced on June 28, 2006.
PETA say that although basketball may be our idea of a game, it's no fun for the cows whose skins are used to make the leather for the balls. The animals are taken to slaughter for days without food or water and many break bones, suffocate, or gouge each other with their horns, and finally they are often dismembered and skinned while still alive.
PETA also point out that the process of tanning leather is incredibly destructive to the environment because it releases dangerous chemicals into the water supply and environment.
