Kobe Bryant has knee surgery and unlikely for World Basketball Championships
Kobe Bryant has had a minor operation on his right knee and is unlikely to play for America in the World Basketball Championships in Japan this summer.
America has to select its 12-man roster for the event before it starts, and once chosen it cannot be altered later on.
USA Basketball chief Jerry Colangelo said Kobe Bryant will still be going to training camp and travelling with the team in Asia.
"We're pleased that Kobe expressed a willingness to remain as involved with our team as possible," Jerry Colangelo said.
The usual recovery time for the type of surgery Kobe Bryant had is eight to 12 weeks.
Kobe Bryant having to withdraw is the fourth loss of a player in a week for the US team.
The World Championships are running from 19 August to 3 September.
