David Stern says NBA league could expand into Europe
American basketball's NBA league could be moving their range into Europe within ten years, NBA commissioner David Stern has revealed.
The NBA is thinking about creating new European franchises instead of moving the ones they already have, and Europe's existing clubs would not be considered because of this.
David Stern feels that a number of new teams should be established for the proposal to work well, but he pointed out: "We really are thinking more about expansion teams in Europe in the decade."
David Stern also explained: "What we've always said was that if there were the appropriate arena structure, if there were the appropriate fan affinity, and there was the pricing structure that would be necessary for a team to compete in the NBA, then it would seem to be an opportunity for us to grow."
The NBA had already been to London in October last year, when the Boston Celtics defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves at the O2 Arena, and David Stern thinks this could act as the forerunner for what could take place if Europe is to have multiple NBA teams.
