Dallas Mavericks basketball team fire Avery Johnson
The Dallas Mavericks basketball team have fired their coach Avery Johnson after a disappointing result in the NBA play-offs in the first round.
The Dallas Mavericks' season finished on Tuesday with a 99-94 loss to New Orleans that has added to the team's bad record for play-offs.
However, in the past 43-year-old Johnson had guided Dallas Mavericks to the play-offs in four straight seasons and led them into the NBA finals in 2006.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is reported to have said: "I want to thank Avery for his efforts over the last four years and for what he has done for this franchise."
While Johnson was coaching the Dallas Mavericks had gained a 194-70 record in the regular season, although they were 23-24 in post-season games with 12 defeats in the last 16.
The New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls are both said to be interested in signing Avery Johnson so there's still a future ahead for him.
