Pops Mensah-Bonsu released by Dallas Mavericks
British basketball player Pops Mensah-Bonsu, who comes from London, has been released by the NBA's Dallas Mavericks after only a single season it has been reported.
Pops Mensah-Bonsu, 23, played just 12 times for Dallas Mavericks last season, and he averaged 2.4 points and 1.8 rebounds each time he played. Pops Mensah-Bonsu had entered the 2006 NBA Draft but was not drafted.
Pops Mensah-Bonsu had been expected to play for the Great Britain team this summer, however, because of all the time he spent with the Dallas Mavericks this never happened.
Nevertheless, Pops Mensah-Bonsu might still be able to join the British squad if he signs with a European club over the next week or so.
GB coach Chris Finch said he doesn't think this is likely and he explained why:
"It's an insurance thing. If he signed in Europe then his insurance would be covered.
"But otherwise we would have to insure him ourselves - and it's prohibitively expensive.
"We pretty much put this (Mensah-Bonsu's availability) to bed when were in Croatia, so the situation doesn't change from our point of view."
Pops Mensah-Bonsu s a former star at the George Washington University and took part in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
