China's World Basketball Championship hopes spoiled with loss to Puerto Rico
China's World Basketball Championship hopes have been dealt a huge blow with a 90-87 overtime loss to Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
Houston Rockets centre Yao Ming scored 29 points but then fouled out with almost five minutes left as China threw away a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter.
Following their third defeat in three games China must now beat Senegal and Slovenia to have any chance of survival in the championships.
"We relaxed too much," said China's Lithuanian coach Jonas Kazlauskas, and he added, "We had some very bad minutes and that killed us."
However, Puerto Rico moved closer to the last 16 with Elias Ayuso scoring 27 points and Carlos Arroyo 25, which secured a second win in three games, and also in Group D, Italy took their third straight win, scoring 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter by beating Senegal 64-56.
