US team defeated by South Korea at World Baseball Classic
A star-studded US team have been beaten for the second time in the same
week, this time by the South Koreans, at the World Baseball Classic in
California on Monday.
Choi Hee-seop made a three-run homer to help South Korea take a 7-3 win.
The American team must now win against Mexico on Thursday or they won't
get through to the semi-final stage of the 16-team event.
"It's hard to believe what happened," said South Korean coach Kim
In-sik. "Not just that it was the US, but it was the best of all the
best players."
This win will move the South Koreans to the top of their second-round
pool with a record of 2-0 and makes them at the better position of 5-0
for the tournament.
Unhappy American fans gave voice to their disappointment in Anaheim,
deriding the Major League All-Stars and future Hall of Famers
throughout the game.
And it was also the second straight defeat for pitcher Dontrelle
Willis, who had led the major leagues to victory last season with 22.
The top two teams from each second-round group go through to the
semi-finals, which are scheduled to commence on Saturday in San Diego.
