Syringe thrown at alleged baseball doper Barry Bonds
A syringe was thrown at San Francisco Giants controversial baseball star Barry Bonds when his side lost 6-1 to San Diego Padres in the season-opening Major League Baseball match.
Barry Bonds, 41, was booed throughout the game by angry fans over allegations that he had taken illegal steroids.
Barry Bonds has denied the allegations and he aims to break the all-time career home run record this year.
Barry Bonds, who missed most of last season because of a knee injury, explained to reporters about the syringe, which had no needle, as he made for the dugout.
"That's the first time somebody threw something like that," Barry Bonds said. "I just put it off the field so no-one would get hurt," he added.
Barry Bonds began the season with 708 career home runs, only six behind the legendary Babe Ruth and 47 behind Hank Aaron's all-time best but recently his career has been dogged by accusations of suspected doping and his name has been linked with the disgraced San Francisco laboratory Balco.
MLB commissioner Bud Selig said there would be an independent inquiry into doping in baseball and into the allegations against Barry Bonds.
