St Louis Cardinals baseball team are close to World Series
St Louis Cardinals baseball team have got very near the World Series because of a 4-2 win over the New York Mets in the National League Championship Series.
The St Louis Cardinals lead the best-of-seven series 3-2 and can seal an overall triumph if they are victorious in New York on Wednesday.
New York Mets had taken a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning but St Louis Cardinals soon levelled up the match.
A single in the fifth put the St Louis Cardinals in the lead before Chris Duncan's home run in the next clinched their win.
New York Mets had had a chance of coming back in the eighth inning but Jose Valentin was struck out with runners on second and third.
"There are always a couple of spots where you have to take advantage of and we didn't," said Mets manager Willie Randolph. And he added: "They pitched well."
If the St Louis Cardinals win on Wednesday, it will be the second time in three years that they have got through to the World Series.
