Perjury charge for US baseball star Barry Bonds
American baseball star Barry Bonds has been charged with perjury by a US federal grand jury, and he is further accused of an obstruction of justice regarding an investigation into steroids use.
The jury was considering testimony by Barry Bonds, 43, in which he claimed he had never knowingly used prohibited drugs.
Barry Bonds became the all-time home run record holder in August this summer, when he beat Hank Aaron's total of 755 runs but accusations that he used steroids have cast doubts and a shadow on his performance and career.
The federal jury indictment stated: "During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes."
Barry Bonds faces four counts of perjury and one of obstructing justice, and together they carry a maximum penalty of 30 years imprisonment.
Barry Bonds' lawyer, John Burris, is reported to have said: "I'm surprised, but there's been an effort to get Barry for a long time. I'm curious what evidence they have now they didn't have before."
