New York Yankees Hideki Matsui beaten by Boston Red Sox
New York Yankees baseball player Hideki Matsui's unbroken run of 518 games was finished when he broke his wrist and was beaten 5-3 by the Boston Red Sox.
Mark Loretta injured Hideki Matsui, who is Japanese, while he was fielding a hit in the first inning at Yankee Stadium.
The Boston Red Sox number two hitter sent a blooper into left field, and Hideki Matsui fell hard on his wrist attempting to catch the ball by diving after it.
He was taken to hospital in his uniform and and was going to have surgery Friday.
The New York Yankees didn't say when he would be able to come back, and a long period away seems likely.
New York Yankees are already missing right fielder Gary Sheffield who also hurt his left wrist in a collision at first base on 29 April.
Hideki Matsui had not missed a game since joining the New York Yankees in 2003 after having played in 1,250 straight games for the Yomirui Giants from 1994-2002.
