New York Mets baseball team beat St Louis Cardinals
The New York Mets baseball team defeated World Series winners St Louis Cardinals 6-1 on Sunday.
Paul LoDuca and Carlos Delgado were both scorers and helped the New York Mets get their revenge for getting beaten at last year's National League Championship Series.
New York Mets starter Tom Glavine kept the St Louis Cardinals' batters to just six hits and one run in six innings and in so doing made the 291st victory of his triumphant career.
The St Louis Cardinals were the seventh different team to win the World Series in the last seven years when they beat Detroit 4-2 last October. However, St Louis Cardinals may have to struggle to defend their crown after the loss of two starting pitchers, Jeff Weaver and Jeff Suppan.
Several teams have spent big to narrow their odds in this season's campaign - Boston spent $103m to sign Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka and the Chicago Cubs have decided to invest $300m in contracts.
