Joe Torre to stay as manager of New York Yankees
Joe Torre will remain as manager of the New York Yankees baseball team in spite of their play-offs first-round elimination.
Joe Torre, 66, spoke with New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner by phone on Tuesday. "He gave me his support," Joe Torre said. "I'm just pleased to stay on and do this."
Reports in New York had stated the New York Yankees were lining up former player and manager Lou Piniella to replace Joe Torre.
The New York Yankees, whose $200m payroll dwarfs that of most other MLB baseball teams, made their second straight first-round exit.
Joe Torre has guided the New York Yankees to the play-offs in each of his 11 seasons, winning four World Series and two other AL titles.
Joe Torre has only one year left on his contract but he said he was not worried that he had no agreement beyond next season.
"The fact is that 2007 may be my last year," Joe Torre said.
