Joe Girardi named as New York Yankees baseball boss
Joe Girardi, who was a player for the New York Yankees baseball team, has been upgraded to manager and will replace Joe Torre.
Joe Girardi, 43, has signed a three-year deal with the New York Yankees, but in his recent past career he spent four seasons as a catcher with the team from 1996. Joe Girardi was also Joe Torre's bench coach in 2005.
Joe Torre decided against signing up for another year after 12 seasons as manager of the New York Yankees, but nevertheless, there was competition for the role and Joe Girardi beat bench coach Don Mattingly and first base coach Tony Pena to get chosen for the post.
Joe Girardi had in the past been a catcher for the Chicago Cubs, the Colorado Rockies and St Louis Cardinals before he joined the New York Yankees.
After he was Joe Torre's bench coach in 2005, Joe Girardi was the manager of the Florida Marlins for the following season and became NL Manager of the Year.
