Japanese baseball star Daisuke Matsuzaka signs with Boston
Daisuke Matsuzaka has become the most expensive Japanese MLB signing ever after he joined Boston Red Sox with the deal being worth $103m (£52.5m) - $52m for a six-year contract for the player, and $51m for his club, the Seibu Lions.
The Boston Red Sox agreed to pay the Seibu Lions that record-breaking amount for the right to negotiate with 26-year old Daisuke Matsuzaka.
The agreement was reached just a day before the month-long window to arrange a deal was due to expire. Boston Red Sox would have paid nothing if no deal was sorted out.
Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said the deal, which includes incentive clauses that could increase the value of his contract to $60m, for recruiting Daisuke Matsuzaka was like "the signing of a national treasure".
"I'm very happy and excited to be a member of the Red Sox," a happy Daisuke Matsuzaka told reporters after holding up a number 18 Boston shirt.
