Boston Red Sox to pay Seibu Lions for Daisuke Matsuzaka
Boston Red Sox baseball team will pay the Japanese Seibu Lions a record $51.1m just for a chance to negotiate with their star pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka.
"The price was beyond my expectations. I couldn't believe it," said Daisuke Matsuzaka before he got on a plane to America.
"I'm pleased I'm so highly valued. At the same time there is pressure, but without it I wouldn't have motivation," Daisuke Matsuzaka added.
Boston now have 30 days to sort out a deal with Daisuke Matsuzaka for additional money and if they fail, Seibu Lions can keep him for a ninth season but will not get the $51.1m.
Seibu Lions president Hidekazu Ota said he doubted Daisuke Matsuzaka would turn down the opportunity to play for the Red Sox, who won the 2004 World Series.
"I hope from my heart that he can make the dream he has had since he was 10 years old come true," Hidekazu Ota said.
