Boston Red Sox and Doug Mientkiewicz settle ball dispute
The Boston Red Sox and former baseball player Doug Mientkiewicz have come to an agreement over a dispute regarding the ball in play when the Sox won their first World Series since 1918.
First baseman Doug Mientkiewicz kept the ball he caught to seal Boston's 2004 victory over St Louis and he then left the team as a free agent for the NY Mets.
The Red Sox demanded that the ball be returned, and filed a civil lawsuit to accomplish this, however, the case has now been settled and the ball will be sent to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY State.
Club president Larry Lucchino explained: "An amicable agreement was reached several weeks ago when it was suggested that the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum become the custodian of the ball."
Larry Lucchino added that the Boston Red Sox kept the rights to display the ball from time to time at their Fenway Park stadium and other special events in Boston and the New England area.
Baseballs that have historical value have sold for huge sums of money and the ball that St Louis Cardinals first baseman Mark McGwire slugged in 1998 for a then record-breaking 70th home run in a season went for $3m, as an example.
