Baseball star Ken Griffey Jr hits 600 homers
Cincinnati Reds baseball star Ken Griffey Jr has become only the sixth Major League Baseball player ever to score 600 career home runs.
Griffey scored his 600th homer in the first inning of a match against the Florida Marlins in which he hit a 3-1 pitch from Mark Hendrickson into the right-field seats, and in so doing added his name to the other legends of the sport.
Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755), Babe Ruth (714), Willie Mays (660) and Sammy Sosa (609) are the other baseball players who have scored 600 or more homers.
38-year-old Ken Griffey said: "I don't think I touched any of the bases. I sort of floated around."
Griffey had been already famed as one of the best sluggers in baseball although he had had problems with injuries that had held him back for the last four years. However, he reached 599 home runs on 31 May, and then at last he hit his 600th in the final contest of an eight game campaign for his team.
