Baseball star Barry Zito joins San Francisco in $126m deal
Baseball star Barry Zito has confirmed a $126m deal to join San Francisco, which is the largest-ever major league contract for a pitcher.
Barry Zito, 28, had been with Bay Area rivals Oakland for seven seasons, going 16-10 with a 3.83 ERA in 34 starts last year.
Giants GM Brian Sabean commented: "When you have a chance to acquire a pitcher of Barry's calibre, you have to exhaust every effort to get him on your club."
San Francisco were in great need of a big-name pitcher after Jason Schmidt had left signing a three-year $47m deal with Los Angeles.
A three-time All-Star, left-hander Barry Zito has shown an impressive performance in his career, pitching more than 200 innings in each of the last six seasons while also notching at least 10 wins.
Barry Zito is the fourth player this off-season who has signed a deal for at least $100m and joins Alfonso Soriano, Vernon Wells and Carlos Lee.
