Baseball star Barry Bonds announces retirement
Baseball star Barry Bonds of San Francisco Giants has said that at the
end of the 2006 major league baseball season he will retire from the
sport.
41-year-old Barry Bonds is actually within reach of Hank Aaron and Babe
Ruth on the all-time career home run list but he told the USA Today
newspaper that the record was not a motivating factor for him.
"I'm not playing baseball anymore after this," Barry Bonds said. "I've
never cared about records anyway, so what difference does it make?"
Barry Bonds endured an injury-hit year in 2005 and his name was also linked to the Balco drugs scandal.
Barry Bonds only played in 14 games last season after surgery
to his knee and will enter the 2006 season on 708 home runs, which is
six behind Babe Ruth (714) and 47 behind Hank Aaron's all-time mark of
755.
"Right now, I'm telling you, I don't even want to play next year,"
Barry Bonds said. "Baseball is a fun sport. But I'm not having fun" ,
Barry Bonds added.
The seven-time National League MVP said that he was sick of
all of the negative publicity he had received over suspicions he had
used banned performance-enhancing drugs.
