Baseball star Alfonso Soriano to join Chicago Cubs
Free agent baseball star Alfonso Soriano has confirmed a $136m eight-year deal to join the Chicago Cubs.
The contract is the fifth-largest in MLB history and is part of the Chicago Cub's major rebuilding programme after a disappointing season which saw them drop to 66-96.
Outfielder Alfonso Soriano, 30, had 46 homers and 41 stolen bases last season with Washington, batting .277 with 95 RBIs.
Nationals president Stan Kasten commented: "We wish him well. We've been expecting it, and we're ready to move on."
After hiring Lou Piniella as the new manager, Chicago Cubs have been busy signing and re-signing baseball players, e.g. third baseman Aramis Ramirez has a new $75m, five-year deal, and second baseman Mark DeRosa joins on a $13m three-years contract.
The Chicago Cubs have also gained left-hander Neal Cotts from the White Sox and re-signed pitchers Kerry Wood for $1.75m and Wade Miller ($1.5m) to their team.
