Baseball pitcher Chris Carpenter wins award
St Louis pitcher Chris Carpenter won the National League's Cy Young
Award, edging Florida's Dontrelle Willis in the closest vote since 1998
and he had 132 points, including 19 first place votes, in the annual
Baseball Writers' Association of America poll.
Southpaw Dontrelle Willis received 11 first-place votes and 112 points. Houston's Roger Clemens finished third with 40 points.
Chris Carpenter, 30, had a 21-5 record, 2.83 ERA, 213 strikeouts and pitched seven complete games.
During a remarkable stretch of 16 starts from mid-June through to early
September, he lasted at least seven innings and allowed no more than
three earned runs and he picked up 13 consecutive victories in that
period, while St Louis won all 16 games.
Chris Carpenter is the second player in Cardinals history to win the Cy
Young Award as the league's best pitcher, joining Bob Gibson, who won
the award in 1968 and 1970.
