Alex Rodriguez named American League's Most Valuable Player
New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has just been named the
American League's Most Valuable Player for the second time in three
seasons on Monday.
The 30-year-old gained 16 first-place votes, 11 seconds and one third
for 331 points from the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was second with 307 points.
Alex Rodriguez, who also won in 2003 when he was a Texas Ranger, hit 48 homers, an AL record for a third baseman.
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Vladimir Guerrero received the other first-place vote and was third with 196 points.
Voting was done before the play-offs, which saw both the Yankees, for
whom Alex Rodriguez was disappointing, and Red Sox go out in the first
round, but during the regular season Alex Rodriguez hit .321 with an
AL-high 48 homers and 130 runs batted in, breaking Joe DiMaggio's
68-year-old Yankees record for home runs by a right-handed hitter.
