The NFL gets tougher on the doping tests
The NFL will be starting the new season with much tougher drug-testing procedures, including more random testing as well as adding erythropoietin (EPO) to its list of banned substances.
The NFL is going to start testing for EPO, which is used as a blood-booster, which helps endurance and recovery from sports injury.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell explainedit this way: "These latest improvements will help ensure that we continue to have a strong and effective programme.
"As in the past, we will review and modify the policy on an ongoing basis."
But although, there will be more testing, at the same time there will be no increases in the playing penalties for players caught using banned drugs.
A four-game ban for a first-time offence and a one-year suspension for a second positive test will stay as they are as the penalties for offending players.
However, much tougher financial penalties will be introduced with players losing a portion of their signing bonuses if they are found guilty of violating the steroid or substance abuse policy.
